Art of Sustainability: Artists Inspiring Eco-Consciousness

Join us on Thursday, August 29, 2024, from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. at the Erma Hayman House (617 Ash Street, Boise, ID) to learn how public artists are addressing Climate Action and inspiring eco-consciousness through their work. This talk will feature Boise artist Teal Gardner and other members of the Ecogeoglyphic Observatory (fondly referred to as the "EGG"). This project explores present-day industrial and residential development in the region surrounding Boise, Idaho, and the effects that this process has over the region's plants, animals, water, stone, soil, and people.

Founded in 2022 and composed of artists, scientists, poets, researchers, historians, parents, renters, queers, athletes, gardeners, neighbors, and friends, the Field Workers of the EGG Observatory meet semi-regularly, visit sites, share concerns, and support each other in their efforts to explore, understand, and work within expanding fields of inquiry. Their work results in exhibitions, field trips, workshops, and readings, all open to the public.

The talk will include interactive elements, room for discussion, and time to socialize.

Professional artists of all disciplines and experience levels are welcome! Admission is FREE, but registration is required. Light refreshments will be served. The Art of Sustainability: Artists Inspiring Eco-Consciousness is an in-person event. The talk will be recorded and made available on YouTube.

Leveraging Cross-Professional Collaboration

Location: Boise State University's Stein Luminary & Atrium (1110 S Capitol Blvd, Boise, ID)

Attend a dynamic panel discussion with STEAM professionals comprised of local artists, scientists, planners, and members of the Public Works Climate Action Team. Explore innovative ways to collaborate across professions and learn how art can amplify larger goals and values within these fields. The event will culminate with the announcement of a Public Works Public Art artist call. Registration opens in September.

Join us on Saturday, March 2, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., at Trailhead (500 S 8th St.) for an enlightening workshop to learn about Boise's Public Art program and demystify the public art process. Dive into the artist call and discover what it takes to submit a compelling application. This is your chance to:

• Understand the essentials of artist calls with practical, real-life examples.
• Learn the nuts and bolts of crafting a standout public art proposal. 
• Gain insights from experienced artists and participate in an interactive idea exchange.
• Engage with your peers during the open discussion on challenges and successes within the public art sphere.

Whether you’re taking your first step into the public art realm or looking to refine your approach, this session will equip you with actionable steps to enhance your career in public art.

Public Artist Industry Night

Join us on Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., at Delia Dante Gallery: Fire Fusion Studio (1322 W Main St, Boise, ID) for a panel discussion and open-house networking event bringing together creatives and local arts organizations from diverse backgrounds and skill levels to socialize, collaborate, and connect.

Glean insights from our esteemed panel of professional public artists:

• Bobby Gaytan is an illustrator, graphic designer, and a mural artist from Meridian, Idaho. His passion for art started at an early age where he admired the graffiti on trains. He attended Boise State University where he earned a bachelor's of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and has been working on murals and commissioned art projects through his creative company called Blakbook Pages ever since. He enjoys helping his community by mentoring the next generation of artists and currently serves as an Arts Commissioner for the city of Meridian. Learn more about Bobby Gaytan. 
• Mungo Ligoya is a true artistic chameleon whose creativity knows no bounds. With a passion for dance, a talent for art and design, and a knack for making music, he is a versatile artist who defies categorization. After graduating with a bachelor's in Art and Design, he went on to teach, do music and continue doing art. While mostly doing commissions, he stumbled on a call to artists for an Old Boise Blocks sidewalk art project, which has become his first public art project. He is a true polymath, and he proudly describes himself as protean, constantly shape-shifting his creative expression to explore new horizons. Learn more about Mungo Ligoya.
• Terresa White is of Yup’ik Alaska Native, French, and mixed European ancestry. Her work is contemporary, exploring traditional themes and their interplay, confluence and divergence, with her urban life in the Pacific Northwest. She is inspired by Yup'ik stories of transformation and the Yup’ik understanding of the interrelationship and spirit of all beings including human and animal people, water and sky people, river, sea, and rock people, and beings we cannot see. Working with clay and bronze, the faces of her masks and the gestures of her figures emerge from memories and stories—those passed to her by her ancestors and her own. The panel will be moderated by:

• Kirsten Furlong received a bachelor's of Fine Arts in Studio Art from the University of Nebraska and a master's of Fine Arts in Visual Arts from Boise State University. In her work, she examines the ecological and poetic bonds we have with animals, plants, and insects on lands that we collectively inhabit, through projects created from the viewpoint of a mixed race (Black/white) woman in the American West.  Kirsten is the director of the Blue Galleries and a lecturer in the Department of Art, Design, and Visual Studies at Boise State University.
