This vinyl print originated as a Cyanotype. A cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a distinctive blue-colored print by exposing a surface coated with iron salts to ultraviolet light, resulting in a "blueprint" effect, often used in art to capture images of natural objects like plants due to its camera-less nature; it's considered one of the oldest photographic techniques, invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842. For this artwork, artist Laura Feeney used cyanotype chemicals on a fabric panel and placed materials (rocks, sticks, roots, sand, etc.) found in the Boise River on the fabric. The chemicals reacted with the sun, creating a beautiful blue and left behind a white relief of each individual item placed on top. Of this work, the artist says, “A Clear View illuminates integral parts of our river system, reminding members of our community that a clean river allows clear views and deep breaths for everyone.”
