Thematically, Shelley Jund is fascinated by dual themes: the microcosm and macrocosm; life and death and science versus spirit. Her work compares physical realms that suggest states of consciousness: the cosmos and a higher frequency; the terrestrial and an earthly, wakeful state; and an aquatic, dreamtime with ancient memories. Jund is interested in combining environments, living elements and reminders of mortality that nod to an abiding spirituality. Her vocabulary draws from the natural, terrestrial and watery world. Jund examines flora, fauna, fossils and bones within the geologic landscape that we know as our home planet. Hydrological, geological and ecological processes tell a story of our history as a whole. Fossils harken primitive reminders of yore and serve as mesmerizing studies of the temporal lives we lead. Living organisms are a dynamic contrast and suggest a moment rooted in the present. The submerged watery realm is a drifting dream dimension peppered with wanderers of a primordial sea. Jund pursues the narrative that has physically shaped the earthly realm and our perception of our world. Throughout time we have reflected upon the terrestrial, the cosmic, mortality and the immaterial. Jund is interested in studying the physical and natural world as it relates to the human spirit. The rumination of systematic, scientific study against intuitive, spiritual knowledge is the basis of her work.
