"This traffic box is at the intersection of Nature, Art, and Education in Boise. I wanted the artwork on the box to be appropriate to those elements: The Green Belt, BSU, The Log Cabin, Boise Art Museum, and nature in the sights, sounds, and smells of the river. People in all seasons of life frequent these places— sprouting young children, gangly adolescents, blooming teenagers, ripened adults, and older folks still full of life but perhaps with their colors a bit faded. The artwork reflects the passage of time and its effect on living organisms. The Dutch iris bloom in late spring, display their elegance for two glorious weeks and then begin their decline, their petals folding in on themselves, colors intensifying even as they decay. The photos of these small bouquets reflect the glory and then the passing of their season. Smoke trees, tomatillos, roses, hollyhocks—these are plants of summer, slower to ripen but producing over and over until the last heavy frosts of autumn take their toll. The desiccated remains are artfully arranged, their freshness gone their skeletons revealed, their fragile winter beauty caught in still life." - Connie Wood
