Inspired by the life and legacy of Juan (JJ) Saldaña who passed suddenly in 2023, artist Bobby Gaytan dedicates this mural to JJ’s enduring spirit. Gaytan recalls, “JJ, a friend and superhero to many of us, always cared and gave people their flowers expecting nothing in return. He made people in our community feel confident and important and was inspirational in how he carried himself with pride and dignity. JJ left before we could give him his flowers, and although we assume JJ knew how much he meant to us, don't wait to let someone special know how much they mean to you. You never know how much time you’ll have with them. Tell them they inspire you. Tell them they are appreciated. Send them kind notes and tell them you love them. Give people their flowers while they can still smell them.” For over two decades, JJ served as the Community Resource Development Specialist at the Idaho Commission on Hispanic Affairs. JJ was a valued member of the Arts & History Commission, serving almost two terms from January 2022 to September 2023, and was also deeply involved with the Idaho Hispanic Youth Symposium, Voces Internship of Idaho, Latino Card on Boise Radio and more, leaving an enduring legacy. JJ passed away suddenly on September 22, 2023. After an outpouring of community support in response to local creator and muralist Bobby Gaytan’s heartfelt tribute illustration to JJ, and with the support of Mayor McLean, City staff pursued an opportunity to facilitate a mural project honoring JJ. Identified by the artist and consisting of close friends of JJ, a design team led the artwork development process while keeping JJ’s circle of friends, colleagues, and family apprised.
