These two ceramic pieces are central figures which represent the first level of a “Mexican Dia de Muertos” (Mexican Day of the Dead) altar—the “El Mictlan” (the place of death). Mictlantecihuatl (goddess of death) and Mictlantecutli (god of death) are part of the artist’s personal “Altar de Dia de Muertos” (Day of the Dead Altar). Luz Camarena created this altar to honor the memory of the two most important women in the artist’s life: Aunt Maruca (second mother) and Yol (mother); and to all friends and family who died during 2005 and 2010.
