"My objective was to create a cityscape of Boise made from miniature paper sculptures. I wanted this artwork to be familiar and to feel like home to as wide of an audience as possible. With this goal, my stylistic choices were influenced by the fact that everyone experiences Boise differently and there are so many new faces arriving every day. I avoided being too specific with the sculptures—like replicating a specific street or building—because that would exclude viewers who might not recognize or relate to the subject matter. This led to the decision to change perspectives by zooming out. A bird’s eye view of the area allowed me to fit a larger number of objects within the image. This in turn provided a wider representation of Boise. While maintaining a comprehensive view of the city, I took into consideration the specific location where my artwork would be displayed. The traffic box is neighbors to Fort Boise Park, Boise Little Theater, St. Luke’s Children’s Pavilion, schools, and neighborhoods. The high number of children and families in the area influenced my color palette and styling. I decided to keep the sculptures simple and limit the amount of detail on each object, which resulted in a more approachable, cartoon-like style for every age of viewer to enjoy." - Beth Williamson
