PEDALS TO PAGES, a bike rack, and READ & RIDE, benches, are inspired by the artists’ reverence for books and the history of printing. The bike rack features thirteen stainless steel posts that replicate the pieces of metal foundry type used in letter press and offset printing. A single raised letter in reverse is milled into the end of each post. If it were to be used in a printing press, once printed it would spell out “pedals to pages” and the benches would spell out “read” and “ride.” The art pieces are functional street furniture as well as educational tools reminding us of how books once were printed. The art pieces symbolically connect books and bikes by suggesting that books, like bikes, are vessels for transportation.
