"After spending many days painting at my easel in this beautiful neighborhood, I finished the painting of the "State Street Apartments" on State and 14th Streets. The charms of its colors and architecture caught my attention at the beginning, but by the time I finished, it was also the people in the neighborhood - families with their children, business and casual passersby, bicyclists, drivers and passengers - that captured my heart. Kindness, encouragement and curiosity was shared by people in the neighborhood as I faced technical challenges and overcame doubts while painting. In the portrait, "Model with Bell Sleeves", I tried to capture the beauty, style and shyness of my model, who working at Boise State University selling books. The tradition of figurative painting has interested me since I first began because painting someone's portrait is a deeply profound experience. If you are lucky, you capture their unique essence and spirit as you paint them from life. I would like you to know that the process of creating a painting is an exquisite thing. You begin with a complete blank canvas - not quite sure where you are going - and rough out the drawing with charcoal from the subject in front of you, and, with my brushes and gorgeous oil paints, go on a mysterious journey until it is done." - Katherine Bejenova Grimmet
