The intersection of Latah and Americana is incredibly beautiful. The old gravestones, the older hills, and sandwiched in between the two, modern roads and infrastructure. I wanted to portray these things with expressive brushstrokes and colors to describe how they’re interesting in their own way. By portraying this everyday location some of us may drive by without thought, it gets us to look at this beautiful and fascinating spot from a fresh perspective. I think we live in a very visually interesting time. By putting this scene on the traffic box, out in public, I hope to get folks to understand that beauty is found anywhere. As soon as you start looking, everyday things such as telephone poles, wires, and traffic lights can be appreciated aesthetically. Gravestones, while sad or spooky to some, have a unique beauty and interest to them that makes them worthy of your attention and contemplation. These structures aren’t always thought of as beautiful, but I feel their contribution to the landscape should be recognized and appreciated. The way the gravestones, traffic lights, trees, and hills all interact with one another, visually and conceptually, is really the subject here. Seeing all these elements here in one spot is unique, uncommon, and I feel it’s something special. With a moment of pausing, one can think about these things they wouldn’t normally consider. By pausing and refreshing our perspective on the things around us, any scene can be vibrant with life, intrigue, and beauty.
