"This piece came about from two trains of thought I was exploring during my residency at the James Castle House: first, a series of collages I was making with cut-up fragments from magazines and books, which became the basis for the images in many of my paintings and prints; and second, my ongoing research into the techniques of Mokulito, or wood lithography, which is done on sheets of plywood rather than on the more traditional limestone printing matrix. The grain of the plywood comes through in the Mokulito process, creating a subtle haze, not unlike the smokey, grey-toned atmosphere in many of James Castle's soot and spit drawings. Towards the end of my residency, I also printed layers of transparent color over some of the Mokulito prints to see how color might change the work, and to emphasize the contours where the edges of the cut-up collage fragments meet. Working with these fragmentary collages, which I continue today, made me think about disorientation, ambiguous and liminal spaces, the uncanny experience of “seeing” things in your peripheral vision, and how these things might be evoked in a painting or print." - Kailey Barthel
