THE FETTUCCINE FORUM // Lessons from Nineteenth-Century Slavery Politics

WHAT CAN TODAY’S ABOLITIONISTS AND POLICYMAKERS LEARN?
LESSONS FROM NINETEENTH-CENTURY SLAVERY POLITICS
Presented by Dr. Matthew Mason of Historians Against Slavery
February 2, 2017
This talk will explore what today’s activists fighting against slavery can learn from the international battle to defeat the transatlantic slave trade in the nineteenth century. For most of the nineteenth century, the slave trade was illegal, yet it remained a thriving and lucrative underground enterprise. The analogy provides important lessons and cautionary tales for combatting today’s slave trafficking.
