Zippo
Zippo is a 51"x51" oil on canvas painting by Boise artist Shannon Sutch. Created in 1995, it depicts a neon sign advertising Zippo lighters that hangs in the window of Hannifin's Cigar Store on 11th and Main in downtown Boise. The painting joined the Boise Visual Chronicle's collection of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and other works depicting life in Boise in 1996.
Artist Statement: My intent is to create images that form questions regarding the "untangible objects" in our personal lives. These objects (i.e., love, sorrow, dignity) are the root of the questions. The "tangible objects" in the images are metaphors for personal pondering and grow from the untangible root to become the flower or thorn and reveal the superficial identity of borrowed questions.
The Boise Visual Chronicle (BVC) is a city-owned collection of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and other works depicting life in Boise. The collection provides a rich visual document of Boise’s changing landscape, people and perspectives. The BVC also forms a unique portrait of the artistic vitality and evolving perceptions of artists in the region. With original funding from the Greater Boise Auditorium District, additional works are acquired or commissioned and funded by Boise City and Capital City Development Corporation (CCDC). Works from the collection are exhibited at the Boise Centre on the Grove, Boise City Hall, CCDC’s offices and the Boise Airport.
