Legal Issues for Artists

BOISE, ID- The Boise City Department of Arts & History presents Legal Issues for Artists, the final presentation in the winter/spring artists' professional development workshop series on Wednesday, May 18, 2011. William Frazier, an attorney from Big Timber, Montana, will lead the discussion at the Idaho State Historical Society's Old Penitentiary (2445 Old Penitentiary Road, Boise) from 5:30pm-7:00pm. Visual artists and performing artists of all genres are encouraged to attend.

The workshop is free! Pre-registration is not required but it is appreciated. Please email afackler@cityofboise.org with your name and general legal topics of interest to you, which will help us tailor the discussion for the expected audience.


Mr. Frazier's expertise includes (but is not limited to) the following:


• Copyright and trademarks
• Internet publication and piracy
• Contracts and publishing matters
• Agency representation
• Performance contracts and insurance matters
• Internet and piracy issues
• General legal issues between artists, galleries and museums.
• Scams
• Laws pending in Congress relating to the arts

Mr. Frazier will also address audience questions as time allows.


In addition to running his law practice, Mr. Frazier has authored over 350 articles for national art and legal publications as well as provided testimony before the United States Congress and several state legislatures on art and law matters. Mr. Frazier was the chairman of the Montana Arts Council from 1995-2005; he currently serves as president for the Montana Arts Foundation; and he is on the board of directors for the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF).

The Department of Arts and History was established by City Ordinance in March 2008 to enhance the Boise community by providing leadership, advocacy, education, services, and support for arts and history. The new Department emerged from the former Boise City Arts Commission, which was established by City Ordinance in 1978 as a nonprofit city agency to advise and assist the City Council in development, coordination, promotion and support of the arts.
