Steel from the World Trade Center (WTC) is being incorporated into memorials across the country in every state. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey houses the remaining steel from the site and is the authority that releases it solely for use in memorials. The Idaho Fallen Firefighter Foundation and Boise Fire Department spearheaded the acquisition of a ten foot beam from the WTC to be the centerpiece of a memorial in Boise to honor emergency responders lost on 9/11.
The intended site for the memorial is in Boise's Riverside Park, where Idaho's Fallen Firefighter Memorial is located. To design the memorial Boise City is partnering with the Olmsted Group, the southern Idaho section of the Idaho-Montana Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, to host a design competition among Idaho landscape architects. All submitted concept designs are featured in a week-long exhibition, where public comments will be received. A stakeholder selection panel will choose the winning design. The winning landscape architect will receive the contract to create the construction drawings and a stipend. Boise City Parks & Recreation staff will do the bidding, award public contract for construction and oversee construction with input from winning designer. The memorial will be formally dedicated on September 11, 2012.
